He was the founder of the Donmeh sect, which flourished in the Ottoman Empire, and which drew elements from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as of the more Judaism-influenced Sabbatian movement (Sabbatianism), which continued in Europe after his death.

Dovber of Mezeritch - Reb Dov Ber of Mezeritch (died 1772) was the primary disciple of Israel ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidic Judaism (now a form of Orthodox Judaism.) Dov Ber is considered the first apostle of Hasidism and one of its most important propagators; he was born in Volhynia in 1710; died in Meseritz, 15 December 1772.
